HYMNS ETC. - Hymn Collections

In the last twenty years, we have written over a hundred hymns together. Some are available in our one-author/composer collections listed below.

	Come Away With Me: A Collection of Original Hymns Abingdon Press, 1998. Sixteen new texts and tunes, with commentaries on each that encourage its devotional use. Each tune is interlined with the text, and the text is printed as poetry as well. Six of the hymns have been included in other hymnals or supplements. (See below.) 	The Song Lingers On: New Hymns for Our Journey of Faith Zimbel Press, 2003. Twenty-one new texts and tunes, with commentaries for each that make the collection useful for devotional purposes.. Each tune is interlined with the text, and the text is printed as poetry as well. Worship planners will appreciate the fact that the hymns are indexed by scripture, topic, meter, first line, and tune name. One hymn from this collection has been included in a hymnal supplement. 	Called to Sing Your Praise Hymns, Etc. LLP. (Available for Reference Only) This is a collection of twelve Keithahn/Horman hymns, with commentaries on the texts and tunes, that have been published individually in other settings (hymnal supplements, anthem settings, church school curriculum resources.) One text, written for an anthem commissioned by Choristers Guild after 9/11, was selected for publication in a special insert in July 2002 issue of The Hymn. Permission to reproduce these hymns for congregational use must be obtained from the respective publishers. (Excerpts from “Circle the Table,”, and “Faith Is Believing,”.)

	Community of Christ Sings, a hymnal published for the Community of Christ (also known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), by Herald Publishing House, 2013. Four of our hymns are included: “God of Every Generation,” “The Wedding Guests Are Waiting,” “When the World Is Babbling ‘Round Us,” and “A Mother Lined a Basket,” and another of Mary’s texts, “When We Are Called to Sing Your Praise.”

	Glory to God: Hymns, Psalms, and Spiritual Songs, a hymnal published for the Presbyterian USA Church by Westminster John Knox Press, 2013. Two of John’s hymn tunes are included: WEST MAIN and SEACHRIST/MARY AND MARTHA.

	God’s Mission: God’s Song, by Joyce D. Sohl. Women’s Division, General Board of Global Ministries, The United Methodist Church, 2006. Our hymn, “Your Spirit, God, Moves Us to Pray,” is included with a commentary in the section, “Hymns Addressing Justice for Children.” (www.gbgm-umc.org/umw/)

	Hymns of Heritage and Hope, a hymnal published by the Advent Christian General Conference, 2001. This hymnal has two of our hymns, “Time Now to Gather” and “Creator God, Who Has Composed.” (www.adventchristian.org/)

	Lift Up Your Hearts: Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, a hymnal published by Faith Alive Christian Resources for the Christian Reformed Church and the Reformed Church of America. Our 14-stanza hymn, “Behold the Lamb of God,” is in this hymnal. Stanzas 1 and 14 were written at the request of the editors for use as “book-ends” when only or more selected stanzas are sung.

	One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism: An African American Ecumenical Hymnal (GIA, 2018) Mary’s text, “A Long-Lost Lamb,” is included in this hymnal set to the tune by Carl Haywood that appeared first in Voices Found (Church Publishing, 2003). See also the same text set to John’s tune PARABLES in our collection, Time Now to Gather (Abingdon, 1998).

	Sing Justice! Do Justice! is a hymnal supplement published by Alternatives for Simple Living/Selah Publishing Co, Inc., 1998. “Your Spirit, God, Moves Us to Pray” and “We Walk Today in Darkness” are included in this book. 	Singing the New Testament, a hymnal supplement published by Faith Alive Christian Resources/The Calvin Institute of Worship, 2008. This includes two of our hymns: “In Matthew’s Gospel There Are Five”and “Are You the One?” (www.faithaliveresources.org/ and www.calvin.edu/worship/).

	Sing the Faith, a hymnal supplement published by Geneva Press, 2003 Eight of our hymns are included: “One Holy Night in Bethlehem,” “We Sang Our Glad Hosannas,” “Like Miriam Who Danced to Praise,” “When Cain Killed Abel,” “A Mother Lined A Basket,” “Come Away with Me” “Faith Is Patience in the Night,” and “Time Now to Gather.” Mary’s text, “When We Are Called to Sing Your Praise” is also in this book.

	Singing Our Savior’s Story: A Congregational Song Supplement for the Christian Year, Hymn Texts Since 1990, compiled and edited by James Abingdon. GIA Publications, Inc., 2014 “Behold the Lamb of God” is also included in this collection.

	The Circles of Our Love: Hymn Tunes by Patrick Michaels on the Texts of Many Poets, published by Selah Publishing Co. in an edition for the Hymn Society 2022 Conference in Washington, D.C. Mary's text, "We Walk Today in Darkness," was included with Michaels' original tune, NOT ALONE.
	The Faith We Sing, a hymnal supplement published by Abingdon Press, 2000. Seven of our hymns are included: “One Holy Night in Bethlehem,” “We Sang Our Glad Hosannas,” “When Cain Killed Abel,” “A Mother Lined A Basket,” “Come Away with Me” “Faith Is Patience in the Night,” and “Time Now to Gather.” Mary’s text, “When We Are Called to Sing Your Praise” is also in this book. 	Voices Found: Women in the Church’s Song, a hymnal supplement published for the Episcopal Church by Church Publishing, Inc., 2003. The supplement includes our hymn, “Circle the Table,” and two of Mary’s texts, “A Father Came to Jesus” and “A Long-Lost Lamb.”

	Voices United, a hymnal published for the United Church of Canada by United Church Publishing House, 1996. Our hymn, “When Quiet Peace Is Shattered,” is in this hymnal. (www.united-church.ca/sales/ucph)

	Worship Boldly, a program/worship book for the 2005-2008 Triennium. Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 2005 “Circle the Table” is one of the hymns in this book. (www.augsburgfortress.org/).

In recent years The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada has offered collections of hymns on different themes in downloadable formats that may be used at no royalty cost for two months. Beyond that time copyright permission must be arranged. The collections serve to introduce worship planners to hymns of contemporary relevance that may not yet be available in their own hymnals. Here are two such collections that have included hymns of ours:

Hymns in Times of Crisis
There are fifty-two texts with suggested tunes in this collection, including two of Mary’s texts: “How Can We Sing Our Love for God” and “When Quiet Peace Is Shattered.” John’s tunes. MACDONALD and HEALING VOICE are suggested settings for these hymns.

Singing Welcome: Hymns and Songs of Hospitality to Refugees and Immigrants
Mary’s text, “When Jesus Was a Refugee,” is included with John’s tune NEIGHBORS.

Songs of Remembrance: Hymns for the Commemoration of September 11, 2001
Mary’s text, “When Life Becomes a Nightmare,” was one of twelve texts chosen for this collection of hymns in response to the attacks on the United States in 2001. The text is from an anthem Choristers Guild commissioned Mary and John to write for children soon after the attacks. When the text is used as a congregational hymn John had suggested that it be sung to AURELIA, the familiar setting for "The Church's One Foundation," a foundation that has stood for centuries. However, he has now provided his own hymn tune, FRED'S TUNE, for the text. You can find a copy under Upcoming and Recent Events on this website.
