Hymns, Etc. - Music & Other Resources

RECENT & UPCOMING EVENTS

Mary was the guest preacher at Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Kensington, MD, on April 27 when the congregation was celebrating the gifts of women. She and John shared in the leadership of an all-church retreat on April 25-26. The retreat was designed to introduce participants to the process of writing a hymn, and give them a chance to contribute ideas for the hymn Mary and John have been commissioned to write for the church’s 115 th anniversary.

John will be at Shenandoah University in Virginia June 29-July 4, 2008, for a Church Music Institute sponsored by the Shenandoah Conservatory on the theme, “Children and Youth in Worship: The Song of Tomorrow.” He will direct a children’s demonstration choir and lead workshops on a ministry of music with children. The event is planned for choir directors, organists, pianists, bell directors, and singers and ringers at all levels of proficiency.

Mary has completed two hymn texts commissioned by New England Congregational Church (UCC) in Aurora, Illinois, and the church’s pastor, in celebration of the church’s 150 th anniversary. When Mary Louise Bringle, Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Brevard College in North Carolina and president-elect of the Hymn Society, delivers the Erik Routley lectures in the two Music and Worship Conferences at Montreat in June, she will be mentioning two of our hymns, “One Holy Night in Bethlehem,” and “As Rachel Mourned the Children.”

Now Available!

Sing the Stories of Jesus: Twenty-Five Songs for the Youngest Singers, by John D. Horman and Mary Nelson Keithahn, is now available from Augsburg Fortress (ISBN 978-0-8006-7945-3) at a cost of $24.95. This collection of twenty-five songs from the life of Jesus for ages four to seven can be used with young choral singers as well as in a church school curriculum. The tunes are short and memorable; the lyrics are written in simple language and focus on a key idea in each story. Because the songs are all based on scriptures included in the Revised Common Lectionary, they provide an opportunity for young children to provide music for congregational worship that is relevant and meaningful. Included in the collection are piano accompaniments and guitar chords, a CD recording with both a full chorus and accompaniment only versions, and creative suggestions for teaching the words and music.

Happylujah! Songs and Activities for Children Ages 4-6, published last year by Abingdon Press includes 9 of our songs about Jesus, plus John’s “Mary Told the Good News.” It is available in a Leader/Accompanist edition with teaching hints and performance options for every song, a singer’s edition with melody line and text for all songs, and a CD split-track accompaniment disk set.

Planning Ahead!

We invite you to explore the resources we have to offer for the upcoming season. See "Published Compositions" for catalog numbers and information on ordering.

Third Sunday of Easter (April 6) • If you have a primary choir, or want to include songs from church school children in worship, try “The Supper At Emmaus” from SING THE STORIES OF JESUS (Augsburg), based on Luke 24:13-31. Motions suggested will help the children learn the song easily.

Fourth Sunday of Easter—Good Shepherd Sunday (April 13). • If you are looking for a spring musical, our “Shepherds Wanted” would be appropriate for this Sunday. Songs and spoken dialogue trace the biblical concept of “shepherd” in the Hebrew scriptures and New Testament and apply it to today. Many of the songs could be used individually as anthems on this day: “A Shepherd’s Job Is Never Done,” “As A Shepherd Cares” (responsorial song that paraphrase of Psalm 23), “I Will Be Your Shepherd” (based on Ezekiel 34:12-16, 25-30), and “There Is A Need for Shepherds” (an anthem setting of our hymn from COME AWAY WITH ME.) • “Good Shepherd, Our Leader, Provider, and Guide,” included in our collection THE SONG LINGERS ON (Zimbel), is based on Psalm 23 and the idea of Jesus as the Good Shepherd in John 10.

Pentecost Sunday (May 11) • Our anthem “Twelve Disciples in the Temple” (Choristers Guild CGA1027) re-tells the story of the Pentecost event recorded in Acts, and is set to an arrangement of the hymn-tune, TOKYO. In addition to piano, the accompaniment calls for an optional suspended cymbal, gong, triangle, and wind chimes.

Trinity Sunday (May 18) • We have a new hymn, “Creator God, How Grand the Earth,” based on Genesis 1:1-2:4a that ends with a prayer that we will be good stewards of God’s creation. Contact us at Hymns Etc. for a copy.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time/Fourth Sunday after Pentecost (June 8) • The first stanza of “As Abraham and Sarah,” a new hymn text and tune, recalls the faith of Abraham and Sarah in answering God’s call (Genesis 12:1-9). Other stanzas refer to Moses and Jesus, and the last stanza is a prayer asking for the same faith, hope, and love for their spiritual descendants. For a copy and permission to use the hymn, contact Hymns Etc. com. Another of our hymns, “A Father Came to Jesus” (from our collection, TIME NOW TO GATHER) re-tells the Gospel story of Jesus and the daughter of Jairus (Matthew 9:18-26.) “Jesus Heals A Little Girl,” a song for ages 4-6 in HAPPYLUJAH! (Abingdon) and SING THE STORIES OF JESUS (Augsburg Fortress) is based on the same Gospel reading. Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time/Fifth Sunday after Pentecost (June 15) • Our hymn, “Behold the Lamb of God,” has several stanzas that refer to Jesus’ gathering of disciples and his ministry among the people, as described in the Gospel readings for this day. This hymn has twelve stanzas covering Jesus’ life from his birth to his resurrection, plus a refrain, so portions of the hymn can be used on different occasions. The tune is very singable. For a copy and permission to use the hymn, contact Hymns Etc.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time/Seventh Sunday after Pentecost (June 29) • The second stanza of our hymn, “The Kingdom We Inherited” (from our collection COME AWAY WITH ME), makes reference to the cup of water mentioned in Jesus’ words to his disciples in Matthew 10:40-42.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time/Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost (August 3) • “The Big Picnic,” a song for ages 4-6, is based on John’s parallel account of today’s Gospel reading in Matthew 14:13-21. The song can be found in HAPPYLUJAH! (Abingdon Press) and in SING THE STORIES OF JESUS (Augsburg Fortress).

LOOKING FOR A LATE SUMMER/EARLY FALL MUSICAL? The lectionary readings in the Hebrew scriptures from August 24 through October 26 cover the Exodus event. Our musical, “Journey: A Wilderness Experience,” tells the story of what happened to the Israelites in the forty years between their escape from Egypt and their arrival at Mt. Nebo, across the Jordan River from the Promised Land. It can help bring this story alive for singers and congregation alike.
